Merle Chesterton started tracing the toe of his boot back and forth in the sand again. Finally he asked the question that was bothering him. "What do ya think, Red? Think Bart's the one what done it to her?"
Red Gleason shook his head. "Don't rightly figure we'll ever know, Merle. Lots of people didn't care much for Ruthie. Lots of people were happy to see her goneGladys Ann, Moxie, Bart, maybe all of them together. Who knows? Lots of people were loyal to Bart Miller."
Red Gleason stomped out what was left of his cigar and crawled into his patrol car. "See you fellas in the morning. I'll report in at the disaster center and tell 'em what we found. Six dead, four no idents, Bart and Ruthie Miller."
As he pulled out on the highway he breathed a sigh of relief. Now his secret was safe. Now no one would ever have any way of knowing. The night Ruthie told him she was going to tell Bart, he knew he had to do it.
